Sump pump maintenance is routine, preventive service designed to catch small issues before they turn into a failed pump during the exact moment you need it most – a heavy storm or rapid snowmelt. Pumps that sit unused for months at a time between rain events are especially prone to failing right when they're finally needed, which is why regular maintenance matters more for sump pumps than for almost any other plumbing system in the house.
You should be thinking about maintenance if it's been over a year since the pump was last checked, if you've never had it serviced since installation, if you're heading into a rainy season and want peace of mind, or if the pump has run through a major flooding event and you want to confirm it's still in good shape afterward. Homes with finished basements or anything valuable stored below ground level benefit most from staying ahead of pump failure rather than reacting to it.
We start by testing the pump under actual operating conditions – pouring water into the pit to confirm the float switch triggers properly and the pump activates and moves water as it should. We check the impeller for debris or wear, inspect the check valve to make sure water isn't flowing backward into the pit after the pump shuts off, and look at the discharge line for any blockages or damage. We also check the backup power situation if you have a battery backup system, since a battery that's lost its charge defeats the purpose of having one.
Cost for maintenance is generally modest since it's a check and test rather than a repair, though if we find a component starting to wear out during the visit, we'll flag it and give you the option to address it on the spot. Homes in Mashantucket, CT with a history of basement flooding often benefit from maintenance scheduled twice a year rather than once.
